How To Decide When To Scrap Your Car

Nobody wants to scrap their car – but in certain circumstances, it’s by far the most logical and financially sound way forward. What are those circumstances, and how do you know scrapping your car is the best solution? That’s precisely what we’re covering here.

It’s been involved in an accident

This is one of the most common reasons for a car to end up on the scrapheap. If you’ve been involved in an accident and your car has been declared a write-off by your insurance company, that means it’ll cost more to repair the car than to buy another. You may be offered the opportunity to buy your old car back, but its value will have been slashed as a consequence of its accident history.

So, unless you have a strong sentimental attachment to your car or are qualified to undertake the repairs yourself, in this instance it’s probably best to wave it goodbye.

It has severe mechanical issues

Cars are complicated and, at times, fickle beasts. Even if you own something as rudimentary as late ‘90s Ford Focus or Vauxhall Astra – which have minimal onboard electronic tech – as the mileage increases, things can still go wrong. For example, if your engine or gearbox lets go, it’ll likely cost more in parts and labour to resurrect your car than its market value.

Likewise, if you own a complex luxury car from 15 or 20 years ago, you may be unlucky enough to experience the failure of electronics systems or air suspension components. Not only can these issues render your vehicle immobile, resolving them can put a serious dent in your bank balance.

In either of these instances, scrapping your car might be the best route to take; its parts will be used to keep other vehicles on the road too, so all is not lost.

It’s rusty

Rust is the worst enemy of any ageing car. What starts out as a collection of foreboding bubbles in the paint can soon spread to structural parts of the car, at which point serious surgery will be required to return it to its former glory. If you own a classic car which is appreciating in price, this will be a tough pill to swallow – but it’ll still make financial sense to get it repaired.

If, on the other hand, you drive a run of the mill family hatch which has failed its MOT due to rot, it’s probably the end of the road. In most cases, the necessary welding would cost significantly more to carry out than the car is worth, so the more financially sound option would simply be to scrap it and buy another.
