How Do I Protect My Car in the Winter?

Winter is almost here, which means it’s time to start preparing your car for the colder months. Whether you’re headed out on a long journey or simply heading into town to do some holiday shopping, you’ll want to know that your car is safe to drive in any weather condition. That’s why the Cambridge Car Solutions team created a quick guide on how to prepare yourself and your vehicle for winter driving. Read our blog to learn what you should include in your car’s winter emergency kit and discover how best to prep your car for the upcoming winter months!

How Do I Prepare My Car for Extreme Cold Weather?

  1. Check your tyres. Make sure your tyres are in good condition. You’ll want to ensure that they are free of bulges and have a high tread depth. Be sure to check your tyre pressure on colder days as well to avoid a flat tyre.
  2. Book your car in for a winter maintenance check. Don’t wait for something to go wrong! Schedule car service at your local mechanic to get any issues resolved quickly. This will give you peace of mind knowing that you’re in a safe and reliable car this winter.
  3. Make sure you have a full tank of gas. Some petrol stations will close over the winter period, so we suggest trying to avoid letting your gas fall below the half-a-tank mark. Poor weather can also create a petrol shortage if fuel deliveries can’t be made. Plus, more accidents occur during the winter months so the last thing you need is to be struck in traffic with your petrol light flashing!
  4. Set up traffic alerts. If you are heading out on a long road trip, be sure to set up traffic alerts. This way you can avoid any closed roads, heavy traffic or accidents.

What Should I Put in My Car Emergency Winter Kit?

As previously stated, accidents and heavy traffic are more common during the winter months. That is why we highly recommend that you keep an emergency winter car kit in your vehicle at all times. We suggest you keep the following in your winter car emergency kit:

  1. A basic survival kit. Your kit should include a torch, portable phone charger, blanket, warm clothes, a bottle of water, gloves, snacks and a first aid kit.
  2. The essentials. Keep an ice scraper and de-icer spray close at hand for early morning and late-night commutes to ensure your visibility is never compromised out on the road. Having some jump leads in your car will also be useful to you and others should you need them.
